Hello newbie here chiming in With my 4x2 Grand Cherokee Limited im getting right at 17 in town and upwards of 23-24 on the highway, I run both Lucas and Seafoam about every 7k miles through the system to stay on top of these marks. CarlJH. it sounds more like a tap than a knock, my guess is a faulty valve adjuster. you will need to find which side it is and take the valve cover off and see if one of the rockers is loose.You can use a long screwdriver like a stethoscope, put the handle to your ear and touch the end on what you want to listen to.
Overall my jeep seems to idle fine (usually around 600 rpm) at a stoplight but sometimes drops down to around 450 rpm, it feels a little low but has never given me problems. About a month ago I had the jeep dip way low at a stoplight dropped to like 200 , sounded like it was about to stall out but didn't, came back up to normal and continued J.
